Office Temptation

The office kitchen rarely has treats in it. When it does, it's grossly unfair. And this time the treats never seem to run out.

It’s not very often the office kitchen has treats in it. When it does, it’s grossly unfair.

And this time it’s unfair in a repetitive way.

These aren’t today’s treats. They’ve been there a while now, a legacy of someone bringing things back after a holiday, and nobody’s cleared them. Either everyone else doesn’t like them, or they’re all trying to be good too. Whichever it is, the result is the same. Every time I go in, they’re still there.

There are two of them.

The first is a packet of foreign gummy sweets with liquid centres. I can ignore those completely. No effort involved.

The second is a tub of Turkish cinnamon biscuits, and I actually like those.

The tub has smaller packs inside, five biscuits to a pack. Which is the clever bit, really, and the worst bit. Nobody has to commit to a tub. It’s just one small pack of five.

What makes it worse is that there’s no ending to it.

The doughnuts I wrote about had a yellow label, a lifespan, a point where the argument would be settled one way or the other. These don’t. The biscuits just sit there in the kitchen, in a tub full of individual packs, waiting.

An indefinite temptation. Not so much a battle as a permanent feature of the room.

I’ll keep going in, and I’ll keep walking past. But somebody could really just finish them off. Somebody who isn’t me.
